Getting The Best From Your Social Media
There is little doubting the effectiveness of social media for artists, it’s a superb method of gaining followers and expanding your ‘brand’. Best of all it’s free (usually), and with one quarter of the world’s population using it, it’s seriously in the artists interests to get the best from the multiple platforms that are available. In our last blog post we gave you an overview of the essentials needed to promote yourselves to a wider audience, now it’s time to dig a little deeper and take a look at the best social media tips for artists.
Getting Better Connected
With so much media, tweeting and posts published by the second, it’s getting harder to get noticed even by your own followers! So how do you draw their attention to your latest work?
It’s been said many times before, but it can’t be stressed enough, that high quality images will have a greater impact on your users engagement. A well lit, professional looking image is far more likely to receive a retweet, comment or share from the viewer and that engagement means your image or post will reach even further.
Hashtags are added to posts to identify a certain topic i.e. #abstractart. These are searchable links to others using the same hashtag, so all users can read and converse on the same topic. They can even be used to highlight a brand or name a user might be familiar with. For example, you might be tweeting about your latest work and have an Etsy.com shop, it’s then good practise to include #etsy into your tweet. It’s a simple way to create brand trust and a good way to get your work in front of people searching for #etsy.
Occasionally it can be useful to include a name of a user or follower into your post. Tagging their @username or page will alert them of your post and can be a good way to get them to respond or retweet.
Twitter tip: If you start a tweet with an @sign it will only be seen by users that follow you and that @username so make sure you add it later in the tweet if you need it to be seen by everybody – useful if including hashtags!
Commenting and replying on other peoples (or your own) posts or pages is a great way of engaging with likeminded people and another effective way of building your brand persona. Facebook allows you to comment as the pages you manage using the ‘Use Facebook As’ tab (found in the top right corner – see image below) so it makes sense to comment and reply as one of your pages. This will not only get your page name seen by more people, it will get you more followers as they click on your page to investigate further. Make it easy for people to discover you!
Occasionally you might get invited to take over an Instagram or Pinterest account for a larger group or company for a day. This can be great promotion for you and your work and is also a great way of sharing other artists you like and admire, just remember to link back to your website or gallery where possible.
The Power of Sharing
Social sharing buttons are one of the most powerful and easy ways to get your content shared online. A common misconception is to think that they are just for your viewers. Not so, use them yourself on your profile pages and galleries to spread the word about your art! When a sharing button is clicked, you can login to connect your account. Once connected you can then add relevant links, hashtags and text to share with your followers.
Tip: Adding links early on in your posts is a more effective way of gaining clicks throughs. Dan Zarrella (social media scientist) published an excellent post that shows how more links are clicked that appear in the first half of a tweet.
An obvious point maybe, but it’s really important to only post high quality and relevant content. You might get away with it on occasion, but if you regularly post poor quality or irrelevant content then your audience is less likely to engage and will eventually unfollow. Post content that they want to read, inspires or assists them and it will build trust with your community.
So what is high quality content?
Firstly your artworks, beautifully photographed and composed to show them in their best light. It doesn’t always have to be straight on, gallery ready images. Why not show your work on the easel, getting framed, canvases being stretched, anything that you think will get your audience interested. You could do a series on how you produce your art, review some products or even some instructional How-To videos.
Just ensure that it looks professional, take the time to learn how to use your camera or phone and invest in some good post production software such as Adobe Photoshop Elements. It’s an excellent paired back version of the full Photoshop and as such, has less of a steep learning curve and price tag.
More artists are moving over to video content as a way of communicating their passion with their audience. Videos can now be created and shared easily with smartphones and tablets and are a great way of getting your message across where images and text can fall short. They can also be easily integrated into websites via social video services like Instagram, Vine and Youtube.
Another point worth considering is to post at the right times for your platform. When are most of your followers online? More at weekends? When are your highest engagement stats? Which day stands out amongst the rest? Optimise your social media time, make it work for you and your best interests!
Optimise profile pages
Your profile pages are important to your brand, this is where interested viewers will first visit when they want to find out more about you and your work. It’s the place where they can like or follow you, or click through to your shops and galleries. So it’s important to have all the valuable information included and easy to find. Keep it simple and uncluttered and use your own personality to give it some sparkle.
You’ve now got a nice profile page up and running, engaging content and a steady stream of new followers to engage with…what now? Some artists sell well on social media, but the majority sell via their own website or online galleries such as Artfinder. So you’ll probably need to lead your followers to where you sell from. The best way to do this is to add links to your profile pages, in your bio and to your posts. Again, make your links easy to find and visible. You could use a large button or a bold colourful font, try experimenting to see which works best for you. You might also want to get traffic to you blogs, exhibition news or a new video on Youtube, so link your social media together and make it easy for your followers to go to where you’re promoting from.
If that all sounds like a lot of hard work, well, sadly it is and there aren’t many effective short cuts out there to lessen your time involved with managing all your accounts. Fortunately there are sites such as Artistsuncovered that can effectively assist you to get your art and exhibitions promoted and help drive traffic to where you need it.
Social media is here to stay, so embrace it as a productive tool and a great way of connecting with your followers. With a bit of strategic planning and practice, your audience will be growing in no time!
